Trips, tips & deals Antiques
buffs scour Central Europe
By Margaret
Backenheimer Special to the Tribune
Central Europe’s flea markets and
antiques wholesalers are the focus of a Sept. 6-18 buying trip
intended for dealers, decorators and collectors. "The Heart of
Europe Antiques Tour" takes treasure hunters to Germany and
the Czech Republic in search of furniture, art, glass,
crystal, porcelain, pottery, toys, folk art, jewelry and
textiles. Despite a strong euro, collectibles in Central
Europe are attractively priced, we are told, because the
supply is immense and local dealers are anxious to sell,
making it a good place to look for that Bohemian crystal
goblet or Meissen vase. Priced at $3,650, the tour covers
accommodations, daily breakfast, local transportation,
leadership and visits to antiques markets and warehouses, as
well as professional packing, trans-Atlantic container
shipping, import documentation and customs clearance for items
purchased. Round-trip airfare from home to Frankfurt is
additional, as are most lunches and dinners, tips and
transport of purchases home from Philadelphia, the hometown of
Heart of Europe Tours. (215-991-9892; www.heartofeuropetours.com
